The giving of an altered coin to a lover or loved one, has a long and storied history with roots in England possibly all the way back to the 15th century. Engraved with your loved one’s initials they were given as a token of affection, or an amulet of luck. Made from small coins with one side completely smoothed and engraved. Love tokens became especially popular during the Victorian era. Each of these is one of a kind and most are dated around the 1890s. I wear mine on a gold chain with a vintage locket I was given as a gift and it is among my favorite possessions.
